The company was established to distribute the HKL program suite written by Wladek Minor (XDisplayF) and Zbyszek Otwinowski ( Denzo, Scalepack).
Wladek Minor, presently a Professor at the University of Virginia, School of Medicine, in Charlottesville, wrote the initial version of the XDisplayF program, while at Purdue University between 1988 and 1995.
The first versions of Denzo and Scalepack were written by Zbyszek Otwinowski at the University of Chicago between 1983 and 1988, and then at Yale University until 1994. Presently Zbyszek Otwinowski has his lab at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
The HKL package evolved into more advanced and extended version - the HKL-2000 program, which provided a user friendly interface. The HKL-3000 software, in a way a successor of HKL-2000, combines all its functions with a number of other macromolecular crystallographic computer programs to add structure determination capabilities.
Every year since 1997 we have funded a Master Thesis Award for experimental or theoretical work and thesis at the Physics Department of Warsaw University (the Alma Mater of both Authors).
HKL Research also sponsors poster awards for graduate students and young scientists.
